review 1: I really wish Goodreads would allow for half star ratings, because this book deserves a little more than two stars but I don't know if it really deserves the whole three. It's a flawed piece of work, to be sure, but that's to be expected given that it was written by a 19 year old with, at best, a seventh grade education. Like most people of that age, the author is pretty limited in her world-view, but what she does know, she knows well. She can be intelligent, witty, insightful, and was able to give many useful tips on subjects such as foraging, and creating home-brewed alcoholic beverages. This wasn't the great one stop guide to sustainable living that I was hoping to find, but it was pretty interesting to see how Dolly and her father lived, and it did have a few useful t... moreips here and there, so overall, it wasn't a waste to read it. I would recommend it to someone interested in homesteading or frugal living, but only with the disclaimer that the advice she gives should be taken with a grain of salt and that farther resources are definitely required.
review 2: This interesting book exposes the frugal living habits learned during 5 years of living with very little money. The author makes it seem fairly easy to live without much money, and I can see how, with the right kind of planning ahead, one could do it. I am personally not willing to do the hunting and fishing involved. This is not as good a book as the Nearing's The Good Life, but it is more accessible than that book. I could see employing some of the techniques the author and her father used to reduce expenses, possibly to the point where I could work a lot less than I do now. Glad I read it. less

I would never be able to live "off the grid" like this but wish sometimes I could. A great read.

It's a cute book, but I can't say I learned very much.
