review 1: (Library Book borrowed for my Kindle)The title needs a qualification on the term 'well'. It should be "how to live at second world standards without a job and unstable income". But of course that sounds much less impressive. The book was written in 1978 by a 17 year-old girl still living with 'Daddy'. Granted the author claims to have accomplished some amazing feats. (For example becoming a NASA engineer - I'm going to research that one. I'm not convinced.) I will leave the hero worship and borderline creepy relationship alone. Other reviewers were clearly as unsettled by it as I was. The main reason I gave the book low marks was the author trying to disguise sheer misering as clever economic practices. The book contains chapters like "LAW" and "DENTISTRY". Dolly doesn't of... morefer any real advice; her motto is 'you-can-do-without'. Dolly's perspective on the going to the doctor is either you get well on your own or you die and it doesn't matter anymore. The theme of Distrust runs constantly throughout. Doctors, lawyers, the government everyone is trying to do you wrong, so you shouldn't give them any money. Dolly and her daddy don't save money they absolutely refuse to spend it. I admire the tough, make-do attitude. I am from rural West Virginia. Today 90% of the people in my home county are 'possum living'. Not because they are protesting against the Man, but because that is their only option.
review 2: This was a pretty great book as far as the DIY, homesteading, and easy-living books go. It contains a lot of unconventional information you might not find in other books. The part about "the law" made me a little uneasy. Some of the advice concerning how to find housing I found to be a little disappointing, too. Overall, though, this book was worth reading just for the voice and tone. Freed has an entertaining and casual style; all the weird little tips were even more enjoyable because of this. less
