I can’t remember when I first picked up this book Red Knit Cap Girl to the Rescue by Naoko Stoop, but I know I’ve had it for a while now. Have you ever bought a book just because it felt good to hold before? That’s a big reason I picked up this book to begin with.
So I’ve read this book to L a few times now. The story itself is very simple and straightforward. If you’re looking for a story that is going to challenge you, this is not the book(Although if you’re a kid maybe it would…). I’m guessing that this book is actually a sequel and it’s possible there is a bit more detail put into the story from the first book. But just from looking at the cover, you may be able to guess that the words are not really the focus.
The part that makes this story special (and likely the other books featuring Red Knit Cap Girl) is the art. Unlike a lot of other simple kids books where you read the page, look at the image and go to the next, I find myself taking my time on each page. On almost every page there is some form of folded newspaper that has been turned into something. From a raincoat to a telescope, it’s interesting to see how the paper is being used on each page. The art itself reminds me of Le Petit Prince meets Japanese Ukiyoe (Aka it’s super adorable).
If I happen to see another story by Naoko Stoop, I would definitely want to pick it up and add it to L’s library. Because of that, I would give this story a 4/5. Even though the story isn’t complicated, I really don’t think all stories need to be. What it lacks in story it more than covers with its charming art style.
