review 1: Olivia Bean and her father had one thing in common: trivia. They both loved to watch Jeopardy! together and Olivia dreams of being on Jeopardy! one day. Now, her parents are divorced. Olivia lives with her mother, her little brother Charlie, and her mom's boyfriend Neil in Philadelphia. Her father, in a terrible twist, has married Olivia's best friend's mom, and taken both the best friend and the mom to California. Olivia feels abandoned and betrayed, but she still has Jeopardy! and when she is given the chance to get on the show, she hopes she'll be able to make it. As Olivia tries to settle into her new life, accept that her father has a few more problems than a 12-year-old girl can hope to understand, and maybe become a real Trivia Queen, she learns that families change... more but can still be family. Filled with fun and sometimes gross trivia, Olivia Bean: Trivia Queen is a good family story for grades 4 through 8.
review 2: Any kid who is a fan of Jeopardy! will love this book. Intermixed with the lightness of the game show and Olivia's desire to be in the show are also deeper issues many kids face - divorce and the aftermath of step-parents, etc., boy/girl issues, popularity in school and realizing how important each one of us is. I enjoyed the realness of the situations and the the wrapping up of those emotions by Olivia, some happy and some sad. less
