review 1: A 50 year old unsolved mystery, set in Russia's Ural mountains during a typically brutal winter is the backdrop for this book, but as a bonus, we get a peek into cold war Russian mentalities- both governmental, and civilian. 10 Experienced hikers set out on what will be the trip to get them a mastery level in their sport. The elements are a bit worse than expected, and one turns back due to illness leaving 9 to continue. The journey takes them through treacherous terrain, and worse than expected weather conditions (Eicher does a great job illustrating just how bad it must have been...and I still can not imagine anyone doing it for leaisure!). It is to be their last journey. None of them return, their campsite is eventually found in a curious state, and the hikers' bodies, ... morefound in 3 groups on different parts of the mountain, not dressed for the elements, some with signs of brutality seem to indicate a catastophic event or panicked rush...and a Russian unsolved mystery is born. The author does a great job moving back and forth between the original investigation and assorted theories, and his current research and travels in the footsteps of the Dyatlov group. There is plenty of evidence to support theories of government involvement or foul play and he goes through them meticulously ultimately, adding his own well thought out and researched idea to the mix.Reading this was like watching an "In Search Of..." type of show, but at the end, you are left with a satisfying conclusion.
review 2: In 1959, 9 experienced hikers disappear in the Ural Mountains. What becomes a search and rescue mission, unfortunately becomes a recovery one. It takes months before all of the bodies are located. Speculation and theories surround the mystery of what happened to make them leave the security of their tent, in subarctic temps, scantily clad, and bring them to their death. It was well researched and fascinating. This is Eichar's take of what he suspects happened to them. We may never know exactly but this seems to be the theory that comes closest to the truth. However, that being said, I'm still left with a feeling of not being satisfied. As they say, proof is in the pudding. I give it a 3.5. less
