review 1: The first 100 pages were pretty tough to get through. There was so much background information on each person, and there were many people. I had to really push to get through that first bit, but once I got into the 'meat' of the book, it was really good. I was so proud to read about a man from Alabama (My home state) that fought so bravely in Afghanistan and gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country. Unfortunately, he was the first casualty in the conflict after the 9-11 attacks, and he left behind a wife and three young children. The bravery of the Northern Alliance in the face of death was astounding. They were willing to ride into almost certain death with very little ammunition and protection. The special forces troops and the CIA operatives were dropped into a co... moreuntry with little or no intel on the areas, and still got the job done, and in the end made sure that the credit went to the Northern Alliance soldiers that were so relentlessly fighting the taliban.
review 2: An excellent book about members from the Fifth Special Forces Group (a.k.a. Green Berets)who were some of the very first troops into Afghanistan following 9/11. The book displays how unique SF soldiers are in their skill sets and trade craft. As the author points out they are like anthropologists, diplomats, and social workers...who can call in punishing air strikes and shoot guns. The main theme of the book was how it was possible to win the war in Afghanistan by learning from these brave men who did so much with so little. A must read! less
