review 1: Garrett Reilly, a bond analyst, discovers someone is selling massive amounts of bonds and that America is under attack in a way few understand. Because he sees patterns of numbers the government wants Garrett to plan and wage a different kind of war against China. They want him to lead a group of rogue soldiers as the last line of defense that could mean the end of everything America holds dear.
review 2: Goodreads has this listed as Garrett Reilly #1 and I sincerely hope that there are future books because The Ascendant was amazing. Thoroughly well researched and smart, suspense and action packed, a surprisingly unique and interesting character for this genre, and a complicated narrative all make this book enjoyable. Garret Reilly is the perfect civilian, br
... moreain child, likeable asshole in a genre typically overrun by ex-Navy Seals and CIA agents. He's a fresh feeling character who goes through really good character development over the course of the novel. Likewise, the novels claim at presenting a new kind of war that will be fought in ways nobody has seen before is not all bluff and posturing. The plot is new and exciting and complicated. It looks at the tactics and maneuvers of international conflict from a different perspective that is fresh. This isn't Tom Clancy with conflicts being resolved with military proficiency or Robert Ludlum claiming one well trained spy will get the job done. Drew Chapman has envisioned a whole new beast and it's great to watch it unfold. less
