review 1: I was intrigued by the plot and the story kept me engaged the entire time. There were several things that I liked about this book. The story wasn't what I'd typically expect. I like seeing how Trevor and Paul became friends. Having Paul see Trevor through his cancer scare was nice. I don't think I've read a book before where the guy goes out on a date with a transvestite and not know it. That was an interesting plot development. My dad used to play cricket so the sport brought back fond memories. So the story is coming along nicely and then the writing abruptly changes. The author would end a chapter at an exciting point that you expect he'd pick up in the next chapter, but that doesn't happen. He goes off onto something else and then circles back around. That was very conf... moreusing and distracting. There was even a part where I thought it was an error in the book when Paul was talking about how Trish was overtly coming on to him but a few chapters back the characters had already had this discussion. Why the author decided to use this writing technique, I don't know, but it was a major fail.I do like that it wasn't all fairy tale easy for Paul and Trevor to get together. Not sure how I feel about Gary's role in the story. I don't think many people will like Gary. Towards the end I wasn't sure if Paul and Trevor would ever get together and I was thinking it wouldn't matter either way. Maybe the author would give us something different. That last chapter with Paul at the grocery store was just fucking stupid. But I did like the story and never got bored so I guess it earned its 3 stars.
review 2: A fun gay-for-you story with a good dose of angst.I did get confused occasionally between the 'straight' hero, Paul, and his friend Pete - something that happens for me when the names are too similar. Paul did fret about his attraction to Trevor, but not as much as he might have. Three months seems a very fast turn-around from 'I might catch gay cooties' to 'I am gay', but he was sharing a house with Trevor and having lunch with him every day for most of that time...And if Trevor ever got an explanation for the why/how of his medical problem I missed it. less
