review 1: Sean bought this to read, and it sat on his nightstand for several weeks. I thought it was a parenting guide, and therefore ignored it. I enjoy my "make it up as I go" parenting style, and don't really need any guidance with that. Luckily, the girl child asked me to read it to her at bedtime, and I decided to humor her. It turns out this is a touching, thoughtful, hilarious book about one guy's experiences as an average American dad. I definitely recommend this to anyone who's been a parent for at least a year. However, if you don't have kids but want them, maybe hold off on reading this until you have one. Unless you think you're capable of tricking yourself into thinking it's all an exaggeration. (I'm 100% sure it's not).
review 2: Nary a holiday season goes
... more without reading Drew Magary's brilliant and hilarious recap of the Williams Sonoma catalog or his rundown of his daughter's Christmas wish lists. And his series on why your kids TV shows suck is priceless. This book is definitely in the same vein as his Dadspin posts. The guy can really write. The essays are good -- he's not afraid to put it all out there, whether it's his DUI, his new baby's month in the NICU, or his son peeing in the pool. The book is funny and sweet--and sometimes sad--but some essays fell flat, and ultimately, it didn't blow my mind or change my world. But that doesn't mean it won't for others. Drew Magary is the ultimate guy's guy, and no doubt this book will cause other likeminded guy's guys in the Fatherhood to raise their fists in unity. Finally someone gets it! Someone cool! My husband is going to die when he reads it. I passed it onto him this morning, and his ten-star review is probably forthcoming. less
