review 1: I picked up this book because I'm writing a novel about a rock legend who has battled addiction. I have never been a huge fan for GN'R, though I like a few songs. I heard Duff McKagan interviewed on a local radio show and I was really impressed by his intelligence and candidness about his past as a drug and alcohol addict. I bought this book as "research" for my novel. I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did.McKagan is completely honest about his past. I really did not expect to relate to him, but throughout the memoir, I could feel his pain and frustration and I was totally rooting for him. As a cyclist (road) myself and a budding mountain biker, I was totally excited that he used mountain biking as one of the means for recovery. I, too, used cycling to overcome dep... moreression, not addiction, in the years that followed my first husband's death. Endorphins provide a powerful, healthy high. Exercise makes you feel better about yourself as well and when you're feeling better about yourself, you have the strength to face your demons.Anyway, I'm really impressed that Mr. McKagan is still alive after that massive amount of alcohol binging. Wow. Just. This is a great story of finding your way back from the dark.
review 2: Of course I have been a fan of Duff for many years and as I have read his columns on Seattle Weekly for over a year (I don't even know whether it is still there or not) and always enjoyed reading those, I was familiar with his writing style before starting this book.Even so: I was a little apprehensive as I was thinking maybe I would get bored with it as I had already read many of his columns and I did know a lot of his history from interviews he has given in the past but I was pleasantly surprised this was not the case. What I loved about this book is that it was written by Duff himself and not by some biographer. Just him telling his story about his life in an honest, no nonsense matter.Of course his lifestyle during GnR is way beyond what most 'normal' people go through during the same periods in their lives. You can only have much respect for what he has done to get his life back on track afterwards and reading about his family life, the more private part, makes you like him even more.I'm not the kind of person to go on and on about the technicalities about the who's and why's and what the author meant with X so you won't get that from me but I do know when I like a book and read it in one go because it held my interest. If you are not a Duff-fan but you love reading (auto) biographies, you definitely want to put this one on your to read list. less
