review 1: Not your usual rock bio and McKagan tells a refreshingly ego deflating tale albeit with familiar trappings. The manner in which he turns himself around after years of drug & alcohol abuse is at times a little OTT, like a more articulate, rock n roll version of Rocky Balboa but it's an impressive achievement nonetheless. The later years of domestic bliss are heartwarming but it's the tales around other band member relations, managers, sideshow characters, tragic endings and unlikely turnarounds that stick in the mind. One particular scene of retribution with a two faced record company snake had me holler with delight. Duff also shines a revealing light on Axl Rose who I had rarely read anything redeeming about before reading this. A well paced, entertaining rock n roll memo... moreir that doesn't outstay it's welcome and for once makes you think "Nice guy!"
review 2: I consider myself a relatively big GNR fan and there were a few things that really surprised me in this book. I was particularly surprised by the way he described his relationship with Axl and the was he was able to rehabilitate himself. Duff's intelligence is clear because this is a really well-written book. I was left with a lot of questions and I wished he went a lot deeper into several topics. I embarrassingly was hoping for a few more gritty, raw, juicy stories and. It's a very entertaining read and I recommend this to all music fans. less
