review 1: I enjoyed this sequel even more than The Saddlemaker's Wife. Ruby Stoddard has returned to Cardinal Valley in hopes of "saving" her brother Nash who is an alcoholic and suffering from hepatitis. She has found the family she always wanted with some of her late husband's family but Nash is resistant to change and doesn't trust anyone. Added to that, Ruby has learned where her mother has been living in the years since she deserted them. It isn't necessary to have read the first book. How Ruby comes to terms with all of these issues makes for a good story with an unusual ending with a lot of drama. I love her Benni Harper mysteries but this book is even better.
review 2: I really enjoy this author's works although I prefer her Benni Harper series. This was a good
... morestory, although not such a mystery series like the Benni Harper series. It had been a long time since the first installment of this series so it took a while for me to get my bearings. Most of her key characters in both her series are very real and carefully drawn so it is a pleasure to follow their lives. less

This is the sequel to The Saddlemakers Wife. Great characters with a little mystery.

It was good. Took only a little while to figure out this was Bishop, CA.

This was not Fowler's best effort. I wanted to like it more than I did.
