review 1: Fair Coin is a combination of teen angst and traditional sci-fi. Ephraim is a sympathetic, sad-sack protagonist. His dad abandoned him, and his mom is an alcoholic on the verge of losing her job because of her drinking. After his mother's attempted suicide,(which he says is his fault), someone mysteriously leaves a magic coin in his locker. Being a typical teen, he does not put much thought into his wishes. His first wish is for a sober mother. His second wish is for the girl he has loved from afar for years to love him back. The second wish backfires when it results in his long time best friend, Nathan, being angry and hurt. As Ephraim repeatedly uses the coin to try and fix things to make Nathan happy, the consequences of the wishes become increasingly negative. Ephraim... more starts to worry about the moral implications of interfering in other people's lives. He fears if he doesn't learn to control the coin, he may do irreparable damage. Turns out Ephraim is also gullible. The coin is not magic, but dangerous technology from a parallel universe, and someone is very willing to kill for it. In spite of his angst, and desire to do the morally correct thing, Ephraim is a pretty one dimensional character and not a very interesting character. The numerous other characters, including the evil antagonist, are barely developed at all. Although the plot is complex and the last half is action packed, the characters almost seem inconsequential. Just about any characters could have been inserted into the rising action without much change to the story. Fans of sci-fi probably won't even notice those criticisms. They'll just enjoy the action and suspense.
review 2: This book, man. This book.I was deeply intrigued with the story and characters from beginning to end. The characters especially.***SPOILERS ALERT***And you know what happens when you get too attached to a character and they get killed off. Yeah, I was crying invisible tears. *** SPOILERS OVER***Everything about this book was just so good and brilliant. It's the type of book that keeps you thinking about it right after you put it down. less

A very interesting concept, though I felt that the characters were lacking a little something.
