review 1: I didn't read the first book in this series, but when I came across this book in a sale, I fell for the beautiful cover and decided to give it a try.And I must say it was pretty easy to understand what was going on. I did miss out on why Darina (the lead character) can see the Beautiful Dead, and why she has to help them find out how they died, but even without that information I enjoyed the book.Darina has a hard time to find out more about Arizona. Everyone is tight-lipped, even Arizona herself. I liked how Darina slowly discovered more about what was going on.Until...At the end something was done to solve the case, that could have been done at the start of the book.Yeah...I was very disappointed by how everything was resolved, I can tell you. I would almost say I won't ... moreread any other books in this series, but I will confess to being very curious about Hunter, leader of the Beautiful Dead. So if I see another book in this series in a sale I will probably cave, especially because all the covers are so very pretty!
review 2: While I love the general idea and set up for this series, I find it hard to read the individual books. They are each under 300 pages, but I feel that they are just so slow. It takes me nearly as long to read these as it does a much longer and more complex book.I love the idea that these 'revenants' are hanging around because there are hidden mysteries surrounding the circumstances of their death. And the idea of Darina helping them solve those mysteries. What I don't like is Darina as a character. She seems so preoccupied with having her dead boyfriend back that she see's helping the others as a second priority. She is petulant and always wants things to be HER way. She needs to grow up and realise the responsibility she has singed up for when she said she would help the Beautiful Dead.I also wasn't crazy about how often the phrase 'Beautiful Dead' was used. It was used ALL THE TIME. And in the context of the prose it just didn't make an awful lot of sense. I have two more books to read in this series, but I don't think I will be able to marathon this series, I don't like it enough. less
