review 1: This was a slog-fest. Between the name dropping which I admit was interesting and the endless conquest list which was not, I barely finished this. He seemed erudite and exceedingly well-read but this needed a good editing. Had it been located anywhere but Paris, I probably would not have completed the read. Over all disappointing and vaguely annoying. I had much higher expectations. And I don't like the cover either.
review 2: What a wonderful book. If you're afraid of gay sex, this may not be the book for you, but the life Edmund has lived, the literary people he met, his descriptions and joi de vive is infectious. I read it because as man my age, he took up and went to Paris for over 15 years, learned the language fluently, and became, for all intents and ... morepurposes, a Parisian. It's a great book.
