review 1: This was a slog-fest. Between the name dropping which I admit was interesting and the endless conquest list which was not, I barely finished this. He seemed erudite and exceedingly well-read but this needed a good editing. Had it been located anywhere but Paris, I probably would not have completed the read. Over all disappointing and vaguely annoying. I had much higher expectations. And I don't like the cover either.

I gave up about halfway through. A gossipy book that leaves me unmoved by the people gossiped about.
