review 1: I'm a fan of Edmund White as a writer--- I very much enjoyed "Forgetting Elena" and "Nocturnes for the King of Naples" ---and as a stylist. I'm also a fan of memoirs of literary New York in the 1960s and 1970s. White's "City Boy" satisfies on both counts--- well-crafted, witty, and a look at the intersection of the high-lit and gay scenes in NYC in the era when so much changed. There's some name-dropping (well, rather a lot of name dropping) and a bit of catty score-settling with backhanded compliments (Susan Sontag), but also some fine memories of writers like James Merrill and Thom Gunn and some fine elegies for friends-and-lovers lost in the plague years of the Eighties. A good memoir, though White does try (I think) to do too much--- this could've been two separate b... moreooks, one about the changes in the New York gay world just before the coming of the plague years and one about the end of the old, insular literary scene, and there is a loss of focus as White tries to put everything together in a few chapters. Nonetheless--- rather a good read.

Can we talk? The author of FORGETTING ELENA apparently didn't forget much....

What the heck? Just a stream if consciousness, not even a story?!

Not as good as I wanted it to be.
