review 1: Irish author Edna O'Brien had a harsh, cold childhood. O'Brien was raised in a remote area of Ireland by severe parents who did not know how to show their love for their daughter. Interesting characters in O'Brien's life would come and go in her young life until she finally got away. I found it difficult to read about her childhood but it picked up for me and became very interesting when she began writing and had her first book published. O'Brien knew many authors, actors and others in the arts and from the swinging sixties in London through the 1980s she mentions many. She was a personal friend of Jackie Onassis and the two corresponded often. I liked reading the book but at times it was a bit draggy with too much text about certain subjects that just went on too ... morelong.
review 2: This book was a gift to me and I was unfamiliar with the author. Unfortunately, I should not have read this memoir without having first read some of her works. As a result of this disorder, I did not appreciate the memoir due to general lack of interest in the author. I found it both mildly interesting and somewhat egotistical - the many accounts of encounters with celebrities of the world and of various disciplines (actors & writers mostly.) less

Tried but couldn't get into it. Kept waiting for action- a problem with a memoir. Feel defeated.

A very absorbing read, wonderfully written. I feel as if I came to know her.
