review 1: SPOILERSThis was more of a romance than I was expecting. In fact, I was disappointed that each of the sisters had a man to "save" her from the dire circumstances of legal battles over property rights and child custody issues. I was very disappointed that Lindsay cheated on her self-described loyal boyfriend, Grant. She continued their relationship w/o ever confessing to the infidelity. She recognized the anguish, and the residual cheating (thinking of her lover while making love to the boyfriend) but she never cleared her conscience with him. How convenient for Grant to put business first at the most desperate time of her life--so convenient that it led to the circumstances where she could dump him...and then all was "right" in Lindsay's life.Kerrie Ann's return to her old... more boyfriend and dumping of the descent guy seemed more true to life. One who believes she doesn't deserve a happy life--a happy love life--will bend toward self-destruction...and that is where Kerrie Ann traveled. While I grew tired of this self-appraisal, it does take more than a good man to pull one out of negative self image. And I know the Miss Honi character was supposed to be the down-to-earth, noble, speaker-of-the-truths-of-life, but I found her to be a stereotype of the kind-hearted hooker. Got tired of Miss Honi in a hurry. In the end good triumphs over evil in this story...and I was very glad the sisters came to respect and live one another,
review 2: Once in a Blue Moon is a novel by Eileen Goudge. It is a family drama that includes two girls who were split up in their early years and reunited after about 25 years. It follows their chaotic lives before and after their reunion. Can they become a family again? At the age of nine, Lindsay was given the task of looking after her baby sister, Kerrie Ann. Lindsay had been taking care of herself since she was about three while her mother ‘worked” or was drunk or on drugs. Kerrie Ann was a handful who ran off to explore when she could. The only time she was really well behaved was when she was with Miss Honi, who lived downstairs. She was an elderly ex-stripper who collected angels and Kerrie Ann was the only one who played with her angels. When Lindsay was 12 and Kerrie Ann 3, their mother was caught and sent to prison, the girls entered the foster family system. They were split up. Lindsay ended up with an older couple who later adopted her. Her life was a quiet one in Blue Moon Bay. She inherited the house when they died and she had Miss Honi come live with her. Lindsay owns a book store and café as well as twenty coast line acres which a very rich man wanted to buy to develop a resort. Lindsay loves her house by the sea and refuses to sell. She has a lawyer boyfriend who she sees when their schedules allow. She has been looking for Kerrie Ann for years and Grant is rapidly coming to an end of his patience with that. Lindsay refuses to give up. Kerrie Ann has lived a completely different life. She was in one foster home after another. She caused problems in school and at home. Some of it was intentional and some was not. She was a beautiful girl who grew up fast. She lived with a musician for years. Her “man” helped her get addicted to drugs and alcohol. She managed by sheer luck to not get caught for selling drugs, although she used them. When she had her daughter, Arabella, her romance with the musician died. She was on her own. For three years she managed to keep herself and Bella alive. Then the system caught up with her and Bella was taken away to foster care. Kerrie had to straighten up her act, get off drugs, get a job, get an apartment, and prove she could care for Bella. She has managed to get off drugs and has a part time job but nothing else. How can she improve herself when she barely makes it from week to week without help? Her lawyer gets her records and Kerrie Ann learns she has a sister and where she lives. Her lawyer says it wouldn’t hurt to have a backup person to help out. Kerrie is on her way to see the sister she just learned about. When Kerrie Ann walks into Lindsay’s shop, Lindsay doesn’t quite recognize her. She thinks she looks familiar but can’t put a name to the face. Then Miss Honi screams from across the store and runs over and hugs Kerrie Ann, saying “My baby girl has come home.” Lindsay and Kerrie Ann get along about like vinegar and water. Miss Honi acts as a whisk to try to get them together. Will it work? Will Lindsay help Kerrie Ann out with Bella? Will they ever get their sisterhood back on track? What will happen between Lindsay and Grant? How will he react to Lindsay’s sex-pot sister? less

It was good as a summer reading. Entertaining story with some morals and pretty well written.
