review 1: I read this on holiday. It had been on my kindle for AGES - I'd actually kind of forgotten about it. I was almost reluctant to read it cos I've never been awfully fond of age of sail books - although now I think that might be because of them being M/F books. I love M/F romance but just, well, not on boats. Anyhoo, THIS age of sail book was fantastic. Beautifully written and rich in detail. I could practically taste the salty spray. I relished the growing sense of threat that grew and grew. I adored the hero's character journey. AND I appreciated that Elin Gregory did not flinch from portraying troubling things like casual violence and brutality appropriate to the setting. Recommended.
review 2: I had expected more from this book after reading all of the glowi
... moreng reviews. On a whole, the story was an enjoyable read. It was well written, but seemed a bit rushed in the end. I thought the main character Kit to be a pretty well fleshed out character. I thought the romance between him and Griffith to be lacking somehow. I didn't feel as though there was any chemistry between the two characters. It seemed as though one minute Kit was being beat up by Griffith and the next minute Kit was admiring Griffith and then they were stealing kisses from each other. I just didn't see that there was any great love that developed between the two of them. I thought some of the descriptions of the action that took place to be confusing, particularly the last couple of battles when Kit got caught and Griffith apparently had been shot in the stomach, which back then, should have been a mortal wound. Kit goes home to Wales and suddenly Griffith turns up at his door and they go off into the sunset(not literally), with no explanation of how Griffith recovered from such a grevious injury. I thought the author did not do a good job of describing the developing relationship between Kit and Griffith and for me, this was what was missing from this story. less
