review 1: I hate it when authors collaborate. Not that I'm jealous because I will never work with anyone, but only because I can't tell who did what and it's hard to compare to the previous work I've read by one of those authors. I really want to compare this work to other books by Elisa Lorello I've read, but out of respect and self-confusion for Sarah Girrell, I won't.Anyhow, I'm not afraid to say I love chick-lit even though I'm a dude. I can relate to a lot of it's themes. However, my life doesn't end as the characters nor is it as easy. That said, I really liked the premise of Why I Love Singlehood especially since I'm getting a little tired of watching people get married and have kids on my Facebook feed. I thought this would go into more about that and about Eva maintaining t... morehat blog. It did, at first, but then slowly drifted and became very standard.I thought there would be way too many supporting characters in the beginning to keep track of. Sadly, most of them drifted away until there was about four. And while those characters were good to read about, I couldn't help but wonder what happened to the others or why nothing went anywhere like with the letter.I enjoyed this book but nothing stuck out to me. And despite the premise, Eva had a lot of guys to choose from. Not to mention run her own coffee shop and have the option of teaching. What would have been interesting if it was at least touched upon that it was partly her fault because she worked so damn much. Also, the ending or dare I say lack of, bugged me. It ended, but you never really knew what was going to happen next. That can be clever at times, but when it comes to chick-lit or fiction, I just want an ending. Real life sucks and there's never an ending. Fiction should never be like that.
review 2: I think if this book had ended the first time I thought it was going to end, somewhere around chapter 25, I would have given it three stars as a relatively entertaining light story about a single woman running a stereotypically cute coffee shop in an arty college town, looking (sort-of) for love. However, starting at about that chapter, each one felt to me like the closing chapter, in that 'life is messy and there are no clear resolutions' kind of way. Closure with the ex? Check! Resolution of relationships with three other guys? Three chapters, check! Resolution with semi-estranged sister? Check! New opportunities and doors opening? Check! Artificially created "dramatic incident" involving a minor character who was so peripheral I'd forgotten she'd existed until she nearly died and caused the narrator to have YET ANOTHER personal revelation? Oh you betcha. I was reading it as an ebook too, so I really did think each chapter was the last. So, if you're reading this and you get to a place where you feel like the narrator has hit some sort of resolution, and you feel pretty satisfied that you read a nice book - stop there! You'll be better off. less
