review 1: Jessie Elliot will be the first to admit that she is a nerd, and her musings, recorded in this ersatz-journal, bolster that claim. As she prepares for high school, she spends her summer assessing her life and anticipating the high school experience. She shares her innermost thoughts and fears through a series of lists and insightful cartoons. She experiences a BFF crisis, an ill-fated outing to a nearby mental hospital, anguish over a prank she played on an elderly neighbor and her first romance. Jessie’s self-doubts and fears are relatable to teen and tween readers. The engaging, colorful and illustration-laden format is very appealing, especially to reluctant readers. Though a plot is non-existent, Jessie’s quest for her own identity and the exploration of her moods ... moreand quirks provide enough fodder for a satisfying read. This should be a winner in any library. Here’s hoping for a sequel with Jessie in high school.
review 2: The artwork is the best thing about this book. There are some sensitive issues (drugs, alcohol) that are brought up in Jessie's fears about going to high school, but I'm not sure it added to the story much. Also, the way the character of the "Witch" was treated and the way Jessie and her friends sneak onto the grounds of the mental hospitial seem crass and unwarranted. I think it would be better if it wasn't written in such a juvenile way (and yes, I understand it's a diary-format graphic novel, but still). I think the subject matter can be portrayed honestly in a graphic novel and I would love to see it done. However, this book missed the mark. less

This was fantastic, and perfect for kids too old for juvenile but not quite to the YA stage.
