review 1: Release Date: August 4, 2014Publisher: Tundra BooksISBN: 9781770496552E-ARC: NetgalleyElise Gravel returns with another Disgusting Creatures installment, this time the oh-so-gross slug. Often underrated, the slug actually benefits the environment! How many times have you seen a slug and jerked away from it (or for those really naughty kids, sqiushed it)? After reading this book, you might think differently. Gravel's book is very informational, from characterizing the slug as a mollusk to providing facts about its mucus. The information is paired with endearing illustrations that make the slug seem more cute than offputting, and the captions for the illustrations are very age appropriate. Gravel teaches children about smelling and tasting as well the slug's mating habits. Do... moren't worry, it's very G. Perhaps controversial, though I don't personally believe so, the slug is actually a boy and a girl at the same time, which might cause parents to have to explain a little bit. Gravel uses the word "partner" instead of mommy/daddy, which is very progressive. More importantly than the possible controversy is the information regarding the slug's mucus and its benefits to the environment. Gravel shows children that even the slimiest creatures have good intentions!Check out my blog at reviewscomingatya.blogspot.com
