review 1: Sweet story with a nice idea of a special lady taking care of seeds. She gathers them up in the fall and teaks care of them all winter long before sending them on their way in the spring time. My favorite picture is of Miss Maple sending them off at night along the lake. Very sweet. She continuously tells the seeds, "Take care, my little ones, for the world is big and you are small." My favorite line is when she tells the seeds, "But never forget... even the grandest of trees once had to grow up from the smallest of seeds," as she looks at a forest of tall, tall trees.
review 2: I was caught up in the loveliness of Eliza Wheeler's illustrations when I opened this book, especially the spread of Miss Maple setting seeds to sail on the water, lit up like lant... moreerns. Beautiful.You know when you read a book about an especially wonderful person to a child, then the child says, "I wish [character] was my grandma...."? That's Miss Maple, a wonderful nurturer with a bit of magic, a loving touch and a knowing smile.I see this book as a metaphor for teaching: taking care of those little seeds, "all similar yet none the same," helping them learn who they are, knowing some will grow in grassy fields and thick forests, some by the river, some nearby and some on faraway tides, sharing stories and songs, encouraging them through the storms ("Don't be afraid--raindrops help us grow"), giving them guidance and love until her part of their story comes to an end, whispering, "Take care, my little ones, for the world is big and you are small." less
