review 1: Elise is the heroine of this story and recounts the "real" story behind the now fairytale of Sleeping Beauty. This book is rich in historical details of this time period, including the terrifying scourge of the dreaded pox which rages throughout the book. There are many twists and turns in the story which leaves the reader in turns delighted and shocked. Reader Wanda McAddon does a masterful job of the storytelling of this behind-the-scene fairytale.
review 2: I throughly enjoyed this book... was a lucky pick here at the new library as we are trying to settle in to our temp housing for a few months. Once I picked it up, I just couldn't put it down, although it was hard to see Maleficent again portrayed as the villain after just watching Disney's newest movie,
... more Maleficent. But the author does such an amazing job of wiping away magic from this tale and making it a real story that perhaps could have taken place in any medieval kingdom anywhere in Europe. I think the title was misleading though, and the book should have been called, "Before Beauty Slept" because the part where she was sleeping was really only the last few pages of the book. Also, there was so much foreshadowing, that I was almost too fearful to finish the book. Perhaps it was just a flaw of the main character, Elise, feeling throughout the tale that so much of the tragedy was her guilt and her burden to bear, when I really felt like the story was quite lovely, despite the heartbreaking parts. Two thumbs-up and I would definitely love to read more from this talented author! less

It was a creative take on sleeping beauty but I think it dragged on more than needed.
Loved it!
