review 1: Idea = 5/5, execution = 2/5This is an interesting change from run-of-the-mill m/m, that was let down by too much telling, and clunky exposition (hint: when you resort to giving a high school student a history lesson in order to world-build, it's a sign you still need more editing). The premise, however, is fascinating. I'd love to read more from this world. My big problems:One MC is convinced his mate can't be a man, however he has already had male lovers, and gets over that hesitation almost immediately: the real impediment to the relationship is something completely different. This is set up as a major plot point (and a great idea) but then ignored.Too much "three days later...". The story is set over such a short time frame that glossing over the MCs getting to know each ... moreother removes any emotional connection. Psychically transmitted lust isn't enough to get the reader on board the ship.Weird level of sex. It's explicitly mentioned, but not described. So there's sloppy licking of a cock, but it's so brief. It's like the author didn't know if they should go for erotica, or keep it no-sex-just-sweet, and dithered so much they got stuck half way. That's not gonna make anyone happy. IMO zie should have gone with no explicit sex: if you're not going to write it well, don't write it at all. Plus, eternal mental true-love bond trumps appendage in orifice anyway.Book 2 is a free side story, which is a bit more explicit. It's a cheap(ish) book, with a cool premise. I'd look into those priests, man: I don't trust them an inch.
review 2: I really liked this paranormal story in a sci-fi setting.Jereth is one of the few people who refuses to let the priests (professional telepaths and matchmakers in this futuristic world) find his one true love. He's like a "throwback" to the Blind Ages, when people looked for their partners without the help of telepathy, and never knew whether they'd found the right one. He thinks it's more romantic to look for a life partner "the old fashioned way". Until loneliness takes over and he seeks professional help.To his shock the partner the priests find for him isn't a woman. It takes Jereth a while to adapt to the thought, but Caris quickly starts to work his way into Jereth's heart. Unfortunately, there are a few more obstacles to overcome, and I thoroughly liked the exploration of this futuristic society and its workings through Jereth's and Caris's eyes. less
