review 1: Es entretenido.
review 2: Madelyn, why did you only give this book three stars?*whips out hidden rant list, pulls up a podium, and perches a charming pair of spectacles on nose*Well I'm glad you asked. Let me start off by saying that this was not a bad book. It wasn't. Was it tedious? Oh, yes. Was it annoying? Very. Was it flawed? Oh, absolutely. And I will list these shortcomings momentarily. But was it a bad book? Nah. Just a wee bit irritating. I will now list my complaints and general whines with this book. A. No one hears these epic battles between the main character, Aileana, and the enemy Fae she is battling at various points throughout the book. Now some of these occasions have excuses. Like, the music was playing too loud and the quests couldn't hear it even though you just said that the sound was intense enough to make your ears bleed. Yeah...right okay. But most do not. At one point there is a skirmish in their freaking sitting room involving shattering glass items for crying out loud. And you expect me to believe that no one heard this? Uh, no. I'm calling bullcrap on you Miss May. That biz would have been heard and panicked over. B. The heroine. Oh boy. Let me just say that it was a relief not to read about an utterly useless heroine for once. That was a breath of fresh air (for a complete useless annoying heroine experience, see The Iron Fey). But Aileana, as well as having a god awful name, has a god awful personality. She gives no craps about other people. It's always about her. Oh woe is me! My father does not care about me, my friend thinks I'm a monster, I have to marry a decent guy who is actually quite perfect for me in every way and has seen my bad side and loves me anyway, my untouchable brooding mentor elf thing won't give me the time of day, and so on and so forth. Seriously. Occasionally, she has little blurbs of heroicness where she feels she must save people from the evil Fae, but then she blatantly admits that the only reasons she's doing it is because she wants revenge on all of faerykind and because she'd feel guilty if she let them die. Wow. Such heroism. C. The love interest. -_-Me reading:Lalalalala oh this heroine isn't too bad killing Fae that's nice oh off to see a mysterious mentor dude okay have fun with that*ENTER ARBITRARY BROODING SEXY UNTOUCHABLE EMOTIONLESS JACKBUTT WITH BLACK HAIR AND A DARK PAST*Oh GOLLY GEE WIZ now where have I seen this before oh yeah that's right pretty much EVERY YA FANTASY NOVEL EVER. I swear on my mother's grave why must there be one in every single freaking book about Fae. I dunno, man. Maybe he's an interesting character. Maybe he is, but I've seen him in so many other books that it literally feels like I'm watching the same dude in different situations falling for a different girl. It's come to that. Kiaran, as well as having an equally god awful name, has an equally God awful personality. As a matter of fact, he really doesn't have a personality. What are his likes and dislikes? What are his interests? What are his passions, asks I?Oh, you want to know? Says the author, You want me to give him some flavor and a distinct individuality? Well, screw you. He's hot and has a dark past. What more do you want? Uh, excuse me, lots more! Or else when he almost dies I really won't give a bedazzle! D. The ridiculous steampunk stuff. Friends, I can get behind steam punk nonsense. I really can. But when there are legit mechanical SPIDERS that can effectively sew up WOUNDS, you'll find me with a skeptical expression on my face and a wary attitude towards all the other steampunk mumbo jumbo. In short, it just wasn't pulled off very well to be quite honest. E. The sufficient lack of Derrick in most of the story. He was pretty much the only character I enjoyed and the only character that had actual personality, but alas, he is absent for the majority of the book. He didn't die though, so yay I guess. There were too many flaws for me to love it, however it did keep me interested throughout the duration of the story. All in all, it wasn't a complete waste of my time, but it did annoy me quite a bit. As I mentioned previously, it's not a bad book. less

Great blend of steampunk and evil Scottish fairies. Can't wait for the next book.
