review 1: Imagine that your family had a new baby and suddenly, they began beating you. The people that you have always trusted, for years, become frightening strangers.Imagine you are an athlete who has been kept in a crate most of your life, trained with less than gentle measures, and then tossed out when you can't race any more.Imagine you have been kept caged up for so long, in solitary confinement that your routines are the only thing you know.Imagine that the family who should care for you splits up and there is no stability in your life and you are frightened, rebellious, and hostile, and you start hurting yourself to relieve your pain. Now, imagine that you wind up in a place where people want to help you, but you are going to have to trust, to learn, to get outside your sad... more past.It is hard, whether you are human or canine. But people can help dogs and dogs can help people
review 2: This book is mainly about two women, Evie a 22 year old who wants to do something stable wants to have a stable job, and to become a stable person. I know too many stables....she was fresh from recovery of drug abuse I believe I'm writing this after two weeks with my Grandmother and not enough computer time. I remember Evie knows the job is at the mountaintop, she arrives at what amounts to a hotel or perhaps pre-traning facillity, she meets Mrs. Arbuchon. She also meets some of the dogs....she really doesn't know much about dogs. She reads about them she writes what she learns about them from the books and from the dogs themselves, you have a kind of stream of consciousness from Evie...but you never really get to know her which is very frustrating. The story takes half the book, more before she even goes to the mountaintop it almost reads like a mystery... you keep trying to learn more about Evie and Mrs. Arbuchon who runs the Inn. When she arrives at the actual Mountaintop School, you keep scratching your head wondering when you are going to find out more about Evie, and who the people are that work there. I know they rescue dogs from homes where they are abused from places where they are used to fight each other to the death, all kinds of places and ways of abuse..... you just never get enough information to feel as if you are reading a story that has a lot of basis on the characters, you never really know them. I kind of lost my way with this book. I thought it would be a great read, and in the end found there was enough to keep me interested but not enough to say I loved it........I'm not a writer, I am just someone who is honest in their reviews...I received this book in exchange for an honest review from "Shelf Awareness" and also to donate to the library that my Mom works at part time. Here is the description of the book as found here on Good Reads...The Sanctuary. High up on the mountain, the Sanctuary is a place of refuge. It is a place where humans save dogs, who, in turn, save the humans. It is a place where the past does not exist, where hopelessness is chased away, where the future hasn’t been written, where orphans and strays can begin to imagine a new meaning for “family.”Evie is making her way to the Sanctuary. She has lied to gain entry. She has pretended to know more than she does about dogs, but she is learning fast. Once the indomitable Mrs. Auberchon lets her pass, she will find her way. Like the racing greyhound who refuses to move, the golden retriever who returns to his job as the Sanctuary’s butler every time he’s adopted, and the Rottweiler who’s a hopeless candidate for search-and-rescue, Evie comes from a troubled past. But as they all learn, no one should stay prisoner to a life she didn’t choose. This is the story of two women and a whole pack of dogs who, having lost their way in the world, find a place at a training school—and radical rescue center—called the Sanctuary. It is a story of strays and rescues, kidnappings and homecomings, moving on and holding on and letting go. And it is, ultimately, a moving and hilarious chronicle of the ways in which humans and canines help each other find new lives, new selves, and new hope less
