review 1: The story is based on the bare facts of a case that actually happened in New York just before the American Civil War began. Harvey Burdell is found murdered in is home and his housekeeper/mistress/wife is suspected and put on trial. The author uses the real names of the lawyers and of this couple but most of the other characters are fictional, as is the way the story runs. In reality the true killer was never found nor do we know the real motive. There is plenty of intrigue and double crossing by the characters. It keeps you guessing until the end.
review 2: Based on a real NYC murder case from 1857. This novel is strongest when hewing closely to the known facts of the case. Thus, the first half, which presents a nice view of nineteenth-century urban life and i... morets little daily mysteries, is better than the second, which veers into historical territory that's a bit too on-the-nose. Structurally, though, the narrative holds up better than a lot of similar historical mysteries do, and Horan captures nineteenth-century speech patterns very well. less
