review 1: Ten Second Synopsis:Arthur-with-a-past receives mysterious scholarship to creepy Shiverton Hall. All hell breaks loose. (Figuratively, then literally, speaking). What a creepy, creepy read. Loved it! The characters and pacy writing had me hooked from the beginning and the stories of the exploits of past residents of Shiverton Hall really did have me moving towards the light while I was reading. While the plot does follow a bit of your now-standard boarding school/fantasy novel arrangement, the back story behind Shiverton Hall and the characters themselves are original enough to suck you straight in. I'm happy to have found a new series that I can eagerly anticipate. I'll tuck this series away in my head for the next time I'm in a book slump and need to be vaulted out wi... moreth a surefire winning read.Highly recommended for fans of spooky stuff.
review 2: A lot of books written for the middle grade market claim to be spooky and chilling, but very rarely are. Shiverton Hall manages to be just scary enough, for a middle grade audience, and intriguing enough for older readers. It tells the story of a young boy who finds himself at the eponymous school where strange things are happening. The students are seeing their childhood imaginary friends, who seem to want their creators dead. I won't go into too much detail about the plot, but it is complex and intriguing enough to keep you turning the pages until the final twists and turns of the climax. Emerald Fennell has a very readable writing style, very English and reminiscent of the first two Potter books. And it is here where the book loses a star. There is a lot that directly mirrors the Potter books: common rooms, a big castle school surrounded by eerie woods, evil teachers and a nearby old-fashioned town (Hogsmeade). But these similarities don't detract from the book as a whole. The fast paced plot makes this a very quick read and its pretty difficult to put down. Fennell litters the story with stories of the school's history which make for some great background and some pretty eerie moments. Overall, this is an excellent read. If a few of the characters had been a bit more fleshed out and a bit more originality injected into the story and setting, this would easily have garnered five stars. As it is, this is a four star read, offering an intriguing plot, some hair-raising moments and enough excitement to make the pages turn quickly. Recommended to middle grade readers who like a chill. Or older readers looking for a quick, quality read. less

A well written, rather scary, tale set in a boarding school. Not a cosy read.
