review 1: Tumtum and Nutmeg are two rather well-to-do mice who live in an abandoned broom cupboard (Nutmouse Hall) at Rose Cottage. Their adventures begin when they decide that the 2 human children in the cottage could use some extra help. Arthur and Lucy live with their widowed father, who spends most of his time inventing things and very little time at all caring for them. So the mice begin to darn socks, fix radiators, and other little jobs. The children think they have a good fairy on their side. Then awful Aunt Ivy comes for a visit, and she hates mice. Of course, she catches sight of the Tumtum and Nutmeg on the way back from one of their errands in the children's room. The hunt is on! She is determined to exterminate them, and they are just as determined to send her packing. ... moreThese are such a delight to read. The illustrations are charming, and spaced just right. The villains are just scary enough for my kiddos (ages 6 and 4), so that they're worried for the characters, but not for themselves. Plus, each chapter ends on a cliffhanger, so they beg me to keep reading (gotta love that!) We gobbled this one up before it was even due back at the library. I plan to purchase this one to read again another time.
review 2: 7/10. Tumtum and Nutmeg was published in 2009 but has a very classic feel about it. I felt that it got off to a slow start but my two girls made no complaints. Once it got on it's way (about the 4th chapter) it was very endearing, loads of fun and had my girls busting up laughing. All of us enjoyed reading about the antics of General Marchmouse above anyone else in the book. I liked Tumtum and Nutmeg's admirable qualities but they would have been rather dull without the children or the General to keep them in scrapes. This was 3 stories in one book (500 pages) and I think I would have enjoyed them better separately. I may still have read them to my girls all at once but cramming them into one book made for what felt like a really long read. Once again, this was all me, the girls never complained about it being too long. Although I enjoyed this, I'm ready for new characters and plot lines. less
