review 1: This was a light, sometimes funny, read about a couple living in the realm of a southern university campus. The wife, Ruth, feels somewhat lost and disconnected to the community. Her husband, Ben, seems much more comfortable in his role. They are both carrying the burden and stress of their wayward adult son. Some of the relationships could have been more fully developed. The ending was somewhat unbelievable and a real stretch for the rest of the story line. It is, however, a good enjoyable read.
review 2: This was an enjoyable quick read. The descriptions of academe were very funny, sometimes slyly so. I'm still laughing at some of them, probably because they rang so true. It doesn't skewer (like "Moo"). Instead, Fox Gordon wrote that community is someth
... moreing we believe in, the only problem is the people who make up the community (that's a paraphrase). That's a lot of what this book was about. The ending is abrupt and odd -- though the comment of one professor that the storm was over-rated just before the worst of it hit is just another rich little nugget about those in universities. less
