review 1: Fast paced, easy read, and enjoyable. Just what I needed at the moment. Characters are generally easy to connect to, especially Saliel. My only real qualms would be the sex (which wasn't graphic, I just felt it was unnecessary at points) and that there are some cultural aspects (the "witch-eye" and Saliel's background as a foundling) which it was hard to relate to since the focus was on Corhonase society and taboos.
review 2: I saw this book on my shelf and felt compelled to re-read it. It's a rare fantasy novel that stands on its own. I remember it feeling relatively slow paced despite the fact that a lot of ground is covered in one book, and that part I found true again. I particularly liked the first half, as Saliel and Athan work as spies with their iden
... moretities unknown to one another. What I had forgotten, or hadn't realized the first time around, is that despite having a main character that is a young woman working as a spy whose dream is to have a home of her own, the narrative assumes again and again that what is *truly* right for her is marriage. The second half of the book throws plot point after plot point into the mix, and I found the two characters coming together a bit rushed and lacking in conflict. But even despite all this, I still enjoyed the writing style and characterization, which was solid throughout. It's one of those books that you like and read again in spite of its flaws. less
