review 1: All of the other birds lay eggs, and Duck is disappointed when HE does not. This little joke might not register with kids, but it certainly made me laugh while reading. Anyway, Duck goes out and finds an egg... but when it hatches, he's in for a big surprise!I really love Gravett's work. The writing isn't always top notch--but the design! I'm just a sucker for beautifully designed books. The one flaw in the design of this one is that the final illustration is printed on the fly leaf--and gets hidden under the library dust jacket. This seems to be a current trend in picture books--one that is incredibly irritating.
review 2: What an adorable book! Emily Gravett's short but sweet book, The Odd Egg begins with a robin, a rooster, a parrot, an ostrich, and an owl;
... moreall of whom are waiting for their eggs to hatch. Duck has no egg, but wants one! When he finds a giant, speckled egg, he's thrilled and can't wait for his duckling to arrive. Nobody else thinks his egg is pretty and spectacular, like he does. So when his egg finally does crack, everyone is in for a surprise! less

Duck can't lay an egg, but he finds a very large unusual egg he decides to keep.

This book was simplistic and cute, but overall had a great surprise ending.

Interesting that this is a child's choice. Kind of scary to me!
