review 1: YA fiction. Last summer Cass's best friend Julia died in a car accident, and Cass took off with her bike and Julia's ashes to do the road trip to California she and Julia had been planning. It was a homage to Julia and to impossible things, it was a cowardly running away from the mess she and Julia's other friends were making of each other, and it was a way for Cass to maybe work out once and for all whether she'd been in love with her best friend; whether she still was. Now she's back at home, helping to put on Totally Sweet Ninja Death Squad, the musical Julia was writing before she died, and trying to work with Heather, the girl who made eighth grade hell for her, and who is playing the ninja princess in Death Squad: Julia's part. This is a really nice book, moving and m... moreeaningful but not taking itself too seriously. The narrative switches between the two storylines, the roadtrip and the present preparation for the musical, and I'm not the most appreciative audience for road trips, but this one worked for me, the impossibility of it, Cass's determination to do this meaningless-meaningful thing. The love story with Heather works too: I liked Heather's flaws and her determinedly painful campaign of redemption. And I really liked Cass working things out with Julia, that long difficult process in her head. The musical is a little bit awesome, too.
review 2: Quirky, silly, ridiculous and.......perfect.Ninjas can divide by zero. The taste of blood is sadness.Wow.Thank-you Emily Horner.Update: It's three months later and I still find myself looking off into the distance and just being happy that I read this book. So good.So so good. When I tell people that ninjas can divide by zero, I get strange looks.I don't care. I keep telling myself it's not the best book I ever read, but my heart doesn't believe it. The heart wants what the heart wants and my heart wants this book.Time to read it again. less
