review 1: Just OK for me. While she has a nice writing style I never really felt I got to know her mother and not real sure her jokey tidbits left me with a clear view of her...so characterization was less compelling...much more about her fear of knowing and too little of her finding out. A good short story (maybe) certainly not a great novel...and she coasted on her ability to write an amusing sentence occasionally.
review 2: I didn't like it, it was a grotesque account of incest that read much like a case study. Given the subject matter I feel obligated to give her extra points, but this was poorly written and she used her family's trauma for what felt like shock value. Perhaps if she had written it more as a story from start to finish and less as a non-fictional blurb
... more of facts as she discovered them, thrown in abruptly amongst the daily banal happenings of her life, it would have had the sentiment she hoped for woven into it. less
