review 1: If you like Bridget Jones you'll love Kate Pickles! Emma Kaufmann is a very astute author, bringing her characters to life with a clear wealth of knowledge of 'the ways of the world'.I connected with the protagonist, Kate, very early on in the book, willing her to find her man - and her cake. And, of course, it's always nice to read about someone who eats more cake and gets less sex than yourself. The other characters were a perfect blend of characters to love, characters to hate and characters to love to hate.Emma's style is thoroughly enjoyable, with Kate telling her story through letters to her sister. Although, I often found myself so engaged in the story I'd forget I was reading a letter. And the occasional reply from her bemused sister just added to the appeal.A real ... morepager turner too, with so many possible conclusions - would she get back with her ex? Steal her best friends lover? Or maybe spend the rest of her time with fumbling around with the mail boy, to mention just a few. And I have to say I was far from disappointed with the ending.Any chick lit fan should have this at the top of their 'to read' list.
review 2: I got this as yesterday's free Kindle book. I read it, but gave up at 21% in. I kept pushing further hoping to see a glimmer of the arc where Kate begins some kind of redemption, but she kept rolling along making mistakes. And she was annoying since she didn't learn from them, despite her sister's letters giving good advise. I've read diary and letter style books, but it didn't go very well in this book. The sister's letters were fine... but the way Kate's "letters" read were unrealistic. The author should have stuck with 1st or 3rd person instead of the choppy letter style. I didn't feel like someone would write about the way they said something or mention the candlestick on the bar while writing their sister. As if the author jumped into another point of view during the letter then cleaned up the speech at the beginning and end so it "felt" like a letter? It was crazy confusing. I hope Kate eventually got things straightened out, but this story was not for me. less

A fun book. Not one that I had to stay up all night for, but still good.
