review 1: I enjoyed this novella immensely. It is filled with fast paced, nail biting military action, danger, thrill, and bittersweet, steamy romance. All the characters were easy to like, their emotions and thoughts were clearly explained, and I could picture the Afghanistan mountains, the village, the rescue in my mind. The military life, lingo, and the difficulties of relationships while deployed sounded real and accurate. The chemistry between Josh and Grace is instant, hot, and raw. The memories of their first meeting three years ago playing in their minds, the pull for each other is strong, despite all reasons not to surrender to it.The author's voice was clear, energetic, and the story took hold of me from the page one. It is a novella, so I read it at once, just couldn't put ... moreit down until the end. I'm looking forward to the next installment in the series, that comes out the beginning of October. Four big spoons & teaspoon for this book one of the Alpha Ops!
review 2: This is an excellent entry into a new romantic military action series by author Emmy Curtis, telling us the story of Grace and Josh. Grace is a journalist who chooses to embed herself with the military on year long missions. While on a two week break back in the US, she meets Josh, an air force master sergeant. They are both looking to forget - and a night of passion in each other's arms fits the bill. Three years later they meet again only this time Grace is on the receiving end of a rescue by Josh - buried feelings quickly come to the surface, but can they take their one night and turn it into something more than fantasy?I was really impressed with the research and detail of this novella. The author has obviously gone to great lengths to create accurate and believable scenes. The descriptions of situations in Afghanistan both from Grace's journalistic point of view as well as the soldier and airmen's experiences are riveting to read. I really liked Grace's character - she's a feisty and brave woman, willing to go out on a limb and put herself in difficult situations in order to tell the stories she feels need to be told. Josh is equally engaging as the ultimate hero, strong, handsome, capable, and determined. Though he isn't pleased to find out that Grace is a journalist, he can't help but admire her - and still desires intimacy with her despite knowing it's a bad idea. The sexual tension between Grace and Josh is evident from their first meeting and the love scenes between them are steamy and well written. That chemistry continues to play a part in the development of their relationship down the road and the emotional attachment they develop for each other is tender and heartwarming. The secondary characters introduced into the story play a key role in the plot - they add tension, humor, and an understanding of the dynamics between those who lay their lives on the line every day in foreign countries. The overall tone of the book is an action packed, romantic, sexy story with real characters, witty dialogue, heart stopping scenes and touching moments. I am very much looking forward to more in the series! 5 stars! less
