review 1: This would be a great basis for a library program or a classroom project! Each illustrator in the anthology has chosen his or her favorite animal, illustrated it, and written a short paragraph or poem about the animal. It's so wonderful to see each author's approach; Nick Bruel, for example, chooses to write about the octopus, but Bad Kitty has something to say about that! Susan Jeffers writes about her childhood love of horses and how it shaped her relationship with her sister. Peter Sis chooses the blue carp for the New Year's memories he has. But my favorite has to be Jon Klassen's duck, lying on its back and staring upwards. "Most of the time when you see a duck in a story, it's not very smart," he says, and the duck illustration reflects ... morethat.
review 2: I think this is mostly a lot of fun for grown up fans of picture book creators (counting myself among those fans!). But I could also see it being used in a classroom or as a jumping off point for a child's own creativity ... ask them what their favorite animal is and why, maybe have them write a little bio or background story too just like in the book. Art students could identify and discuss the different techniques used in the book and also create their own "pages". Could also be used in children's lit courses when studying picture books, illustrators and technique. less
