review 1: In A Family Secret by Eric Heuvel and Lorraine T. Miller, Jeroen a young teenager discovers facts and hears his grandmothers' story from the past, involving World War 2. I thought this was a unique book and a creative way to tell a fascinating story, while bringing interesting history facts into the novel. This story has many different settings, each connecting with World War 2. This story involves friendship, family, action, and love. In this book Jereon travels to his grandmother's house for a visit and to look for something for a yard sell he is doing. While searching in his grandmother's attic, he finds a picture of his grandmother when she was young with another little girl. When Jeroen goes back down and asks about the picture, his grandmother explains to ... morehim who the other girl was and their story together. She helps him to understand World War 2 and gives fantastic information throughout the novel. I thought that this was an great piece of writing that told a neat story, while supporting you with facts along the way. I recommend this book to anybody ready to have an interesting story and who is ready to learn.
review 2: A Family Secret was an amazing and sensitive book about the German invasion of the Netherlands. This book depicts the story of Helena and her Jewish childhood friend Ester, which is told by a much older Helena to her grandson Jeroen. This story is very historically accurate while still being rich with friendship, prejudice, suffering, and standing up for what you believe in. This book was a beautifully illustrated graphic novel that was also historical fiction. I think graphic novel was the best choice for this book because it depicted the topic using both words and pictures from a variety of perspectives and viewpoints of time. This makes it more entertaining to read and easier to absorb and comprehend. I don't think there could really be any changes to make it better. I think it is really cool that Eric Heuvel (the author/illustrator) wrote another book from the perspective of Ester called The Search. This book deserves 2 thumbs up! I would recommend A Family Secret to anyone that likes to learn about history in new and interesting ways. less

Public library copy. Well told, depressing story, the art style was very much like Tin-Tin's Herge.

Heartbreaking as are all Holocaust stories, but (spoiler alert) happy ending.
