review 1: I have never read a book like this before. It is part author biography, part character analysis, and part (albeit small) self-help. Blakemore pulls all of these aspects together in an enjoyable trip down memory lane while charging readers to not let these novels and their "literary heroines" sit idly on our shelves but to reread and rediscover their relevance again and again. Compelling and resourceful.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book. I picked it up for the chapter on Laura Ingalls Wilder and found myself reading chapters on books I had not read. I found myself relating to the author, having delved into well-loved classics to escape the stress of everyday life. I especially liked the recommendations at the end of the chapters for when to read/reread the novel in question. Overall, an interesting take on well-beloved literary heroines. less
