review 1: I enjoyed Conquistadora, actually more than I expected to. I found the history of early Puerto Rico and their slavery system fascinating. I did, however, have a little problem with the ending, which I found extremely abrupt and not really satisfying. It certainly left me with questions about Anna, her husband, son and their plantation. Oh well, perhaps someday I’ll see a sequel by Esmeralda Santiago.
review 2: A sweeping story, focused on a girl and her ambitious desires to leave Spain and manage a plantation in Puerto Rico. The rambling episodes reflect many of the different time periods ending approximately with the freeing of the slaves. She recovered it by reteaching herself with picture books, but was for the first time unable to do her own Spanish translation because she hadn't retaught herself that yet. less
