review 1: I enjoyed Conquistadora, actually more than I expected to. I found the history of early Puerto Rico and their slavery system fascinating. I did, however, have a little problem with the ending, which I found extremely abrupt and not really satisfying. It certainly left me with questions about Anna, her husband, son and their plantation. Oh well, perhaps someday I’ll see a sequel by Esmeralda Santiago.
review 2: A sweeping story, focused on a girl and her ambitious desires to leave Spain and manage a plantation in Puerto Rico. The rambling episodes reflect many of the different time periods ending approximately with the freeing of the slaves.
