review 2: Keret's brisk short stories, which range from a few paragraphs to a few pages, are as sticky, black, and compulsory as heroin. To my mind this book has exactly one flaw, but it's enormous: to a one, every female character is a frigid wife, pain in the ass girlfriend, or a whore. How is it possible that an author who can write a two page story so spiky that afterwords I set the book aside and ask myself, "What are stories for? What is the difference between what is real and what is true? And what, of a magic goldfish, would I wish?"-- an author, in other words, who I should be able to love without question-- can't dream up a woman that's more than stitched-together character flaws to be used only as a foil? less

Often brilliant. Almost always unpredictable. A breath of fresh air.
