review 1: The author’s purpose is show you what Doctor Josef Mengele did to twins during the Holocaust. The author wants you to see what Eva Mozes and her twin sister (and many other twins) had to go through when they were in Auschwitz. Dr. Mengele did deadly medical experiments, ejecting viruses into their bodies, cutting body parts off one twin and sewing them onto the other twin. When you read, you feel like you are right next to Eva the whole time, watching everything that happens to her. You wish you could do something to help but you cant. That’s how vivid the story is.The theme of the book is surviving. For Eva and her sister it is life or death. They can either survive to the end or give up. They both go through horrible times, no food and water, freezing, no cloth... morees, having to deal with Dr. Mengele. But they tried to survive for each other because thats all they had left. The style was was narration. The author told the story throughout a series of events in chronological order. It was told in Eva’s point of view. It took you through with how Eva and her sister lived their lives dealing with people being rude to them because they were jews, going to Auschwitz, meeting Dr. Mengele and being experimented on, and just trying to survive once they were in Auschwitz. The style was very effective My opinion of the book was that it was very informative. It was very interesting and always had my attention. It was interesting on how Dr. Mengele experimented on twins and following Eva's story. Overall I would give it five stars. It had pictures of twins, Eva’s family, Dr. Mengele, the camp and it was just written very well. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who would want to read about what was happening inside the camp and wanted to know who Dr. Mengele was.
review 2: There are some stories so shocking, so utterly appalling that it's hard to comprehend the how of it, let alone the why. Eva Mozes and her twin sister Miriam were taken to Auschwitz at age ten and selected to be a part of Josef Mengele's experiments. Before that they'd had to watch as their friends and schoolmates turned on them, shunning them as 'dirty Jews'. When the Mozes were evicted from their home the whole village, including the twins' former best friend, stood outside their houses and watched. Not a single one of them said anything or attempted to help them. Then they were taken to Auschwitz. They never saw their parents or older sisters again. The Nazi doctors led by Mengele's began to torture them in the name of 'medical science'.This book is short but incredibly powerful and direct. No punches are pulled, and the information given about what happened to Eva and her sister, and the many others like them, is horrifying and necessary reading for anyone who wants to know about the evils of the Holocaust.
