review 1: I expected to like this book more than I did. The book starts out slowly and does progress to more interesting reading. The author had very interesting experiences while living abroad. I also lived in a developing country, although I certainly did not rough it as much as she did in Uganda. I know that humor is a great way to deal with the challenges a foreigner faces; however, at times I felt her humor came across more as criticism than as coping. Although I enjoyed reading about the cultures she experienced, I was not able to connect emotionally with her story telling.
review 2: OK read with some interesting information about east africa, but full of silly extrameous detail that i suppose was supposed tobe the hilarious part (that I never found. the book
... morewas not laugh out loud as it was publicized to be). Also, poor editing (shame on the editors for that)-- the entire first section that takes place in ecuador should have been excised. I read this book because I am fascinated by Africa (and hopefully will be travelling there in 2014) but it did not engage me as much as some other books have. less
