review 1: I am of two minds about this novel. On one side I feel as though this was a well-written novel with a good storyline and some creative and well thought out characters. On the other hand there was not enough intrigue for the plot to be enticingly carried through to the end. Not to mention the end itself, which was disappointing. Josephine Gant is a woman with many secrets, even from the reader. As the Duke of Lennox tries to break through her defenses and get to know the real woman behind the façade, so too are we as the reader. We are aware she has a troubled past, but other than that she is as much a mystery to us as she is to Lennox. I liked this aspect of the novel, I found it to be unique. Lennox on the other hand is very sure of who he is--a Duke. In fact it is almos... moret all that he thinks about. He is rather self-important and regal and truthfully I didn't really care for him that much. However his character was the perfect match for Josephine's character, as they balanced each other out nicely. Josephine makes the Duke realize that there is much more to him than just his dukedom, plus her fiery attitude towards society's social structure as a whole was a good thing for him to be introduced to. Josephine makes him realize that he and other such 'men above reproach' are able to get away with social evils that the common man could not. Considering all of the talk of society and it's evils in this novel, I was disappointed to find that not that much changed towards the end of the novel. Not that I expected the author to pen a miraculous change in London society of course, but rather I expected there to be much more of an outcry when Josephine took her views public. Plus, I expected the Duke to change more than what he did at the Sleeping Dove (no spoilers here). All in all, it seems as though Josephine fit nicely into her role as a Duchess. Perhaps even become a woman above reproach. It almost felt as though the story was incomplete; I would have liked to have seen the consequences of Josephine's radical ideas as they rippled throughout society. Unfortunately though the story ended with a mere hint of society's disapproval and I was disappointed not to know more.
review 2: I first read this book because it was written by a woman from my hometown and I am glad that I did. I have read some reviewers feel that the book contained some anachronisms. That did not bother me, as there are almost always at least one in any historical novel. I am not reading as a historian, only for enjoyment. The characters were different from the typical romances . The characters , I believe, were fully realized. I liked that even the secondary characters were fleshed out to the point that I wanted to know more about them and their futures. I would read more by this author. less

Entertaining, albeit a bit cheesy. Basically a romance novel set in the 1800s.
