review 1: Wyld starts from the present and alternates moving forward and moving backward in time. I expected that the novel would conclude with a traumatic event that explained everything, and I thought I'd probably find it, well, banal. I didn't. The gradual revelation of Jake's history matches her growing acceptance of it, and in the end I thought the novel couldn't have been written linearly without losing much of its effect. Her characterization is lovely. There are moments of oddness, but they don't detract from a beautiful novel, which I will want to read many times.
review 2: Jake Whyte lives alone near a coastal town in the UK where she raises sheep and battles the demons of a dark past that haunts her, even half a world away. Forced to leave the Australian town ... morewhere she grew up, ostracized by her family and her community, she traveled to Darwin where she sold the only product she had to offer: herself. "Adopted" and then held captive by one of her sheep-farming clients, Jake managed to escape and find work as a roustabout and sheep shearer. Fearing recapture, she fled to England. And now, someone or something is killing her sheep, one by one, and she is beginning to wonder how long she can continue her solitary and independent existence. Unflinching language, vivid descriptions, and brilliant writing make this dark story one that will stay in your mind for awhile. Recommended. less
