review 1: You just have to admire an author who will take on a character from an entirely different country and have her come across as real. The same might be said of the northern Wisconsin setting over a period of months. Feisty Tildy leaves Australia with her grandmother's wedding dress and a booze soaked wedding cake to wed a man she thinks she will start a new life with. Instead, she finds herself made penniless by a scam and is trapped in the elaborate gown she wore to surprise her groom. Along comes very handsome but rather dour Marc Olsen who not only helps her out of the gown but saves her from freezing. Not wanting the responsibility of a wife and family of his own after raising three younger sisters while his mother worked, Marc does all he can to resist Tildy's outback c... moreharm that wins over everyone she meets, even his sullen nephew. Tildy is a wonderful and resourceful character despite her rough beginning. Marc often deserves a kick in the pants, but in the end he does come around of course. I'm still wondering what happened to the wedding cake as it probably could last for years.
review 2: I really liked the beginning but the story wasn't as gripping as I thought it would be. I don't know what exactly happened but it didn't live up to be as interesting. The story was alright but I just didn't feel charmed by the characters, therefore, I think this book deserves a 3.5. The story revolves around Marc and Tilly. Marc is an architect from New York. He had given up a lot in his youth to take care of his family. Now that they are grown, he is off doing his own thing and is averse to being obligated. Tilly, on the other hand, is looking for ways to tie herself to another. She came to Hobin thinking that she will be with her great love.He turns out to be a scammer and she is stuck in a foreign country, broke and homeless. She crosses paths with Marc and they are entwined for a long time. She gets close to his family and to him, unbeknownst to Marc. They fall in love with each other with Marc realizing later than ideal. There is a subplot involving his sister and the police officer. There is also the distant teen. I was expecting a lot more since the book started out interestingly enough. However, as the story progressed, I found myself caring less and less. Tilly, while intriguing in the beginning, turned out to be Mary Poppins. No, I don't really know the Mary Poppins' story but I'm going by the Simpsons' version of it. She was just the solution to everybody's problem and it got old really fast. She was a nurse, an intriguing foreigner, a businessperson..etc...etc. I think overtime, I kind of forgot about her and distanced myself. It was just too convenient. When her character (as perceived by others) overshadowed her personal thoughts, I was lost. I just read to finish it. I didn't find myself rooting for her and adversely, transferred this emotion to the rest of the characters. less
