review 1: Ik ben zelf au pair geweest bij een redelijk rijk Brits gezin, vandaar dat boeken over au pairs en nannies mij meestal wel aanspreken. Wat de Nanny zag van Fiona Neill vind ik wel een van de betere boeken over dit onderwerp, omdat het niet alleen gaat over de zorg van de kinderen en de onhebbelijkheid van de ouders, maar ook over de plaats van een nanny in een gezin en hoe complex zo'n relatie soms is. Een ander belangrijk onderwerp in dit boek is de financiële wereld en de economische crisis. Doordat Fiona Neill dit onderwerp ook een belangrijke plek heeft gegeven in het boek, maakt dat dit boek meer diepgang heeft en het ook nog een actueel tintje heeft, hoewel bepaalde gebeurtenissen inmiddels alweer een paar jaar geleden zijn. Aan het einde van het boek had ik wel eve... moren medelijden met de hoofdpersoon, Ali, maar uiteindelijk heeft ze ook haar eigen keuzes gemaakt. Het boek is origineel qua invalshoek en uitwerking. Nog een pluspunt vind ik dat het niet voorspelbaar is. Bepaalde wendingen in het verhaal had ik niet zien aankomen. Het boek leest niet zo vlot als de chicklit die ik hiervoor las (Gek van jou van Marijke van den Elsen), maar het is wel een interessant boek, waardoor je toch geboeid blijft en verder wil lezen. Dit was mijn eerste boek van Fiona Neill. Aangezien deze goed bevallen is, ga ik nog wel een keer een ander boek van haar lezen. Ik hoop dat die dan net zo goed, of zelfs beter is dan dit boek. Wat de nanny zag is absoluut een aanrader als je van chicklits met wat diepgang houdt.
review 2: For a 450 page book, I was not overly impressed. While I did finish the entire thing, I feel like it was way too drawn out, and there were many details that related to the financial crisis aspect of the story that should have been drawn out more than others. I feel like there were some parts of the book that didn't necessarily belong in the text and I found myself questioning why they were included. While the story is supposed to be about the credit crisis and its effect on the Skinner family (as well as their part in the entire thing), I didn't think the author paid all that much attention to the central theme that the book was supposed to be about. If you were really looking for 'what the nanny saw,' I don't think there was enough attention paid to that. I don't feel like Ali's behind the scenes view was as well thought out as it should have been, especially with it being the title of the book. We only really get a short glimpse into what the nanny saw at the end, and I didn't feel as though it was very compelling. less
