review 1: Muy buen libro!!
review 2: I had lots of expectations placed
... moreon this story as many friends of mine recommended it to me. It didn't disappoint me, but I felt it wasn't what I expected either. "Indias Blancas" is a story set in 1870's Argentina and the main character is Laura Escalante, a stubborn and beautiful socialite that creates a huge scandal when she decides to take a trip to the province of Córdoba to take care of her sick older brother, a priest. She takes her maid with her and a friend of hers, Julián Riglós, a 40-year old solicitor who has been secretly in love with Laura throughout his life. Once in Córdoba, Laura meets Ranquel Indian Chief Nahueltruz Guor, who has a very close relationship with her brother. They make a huge impression on each other and that first impression turns into a feverish passion in a matter of days that will lead both to disaster. Most of the book consisted of another parallel storyline which are the "Memories" of Blanca Montes, one of Laura's aunts and mother of Agustín, Laura's ill brother. Blanca was taken by a group of ranquel indians when she was on her way to Córdoba as well, around the 1820's and in her memories she tells how she became used to live among the indians, considered "wild beasts" by the Catholics and of her endearing relationship with the man who took her as his captive, Indian chief Mariano Rosas. Blanca's memories are pivotal evidence for both the reader and Laura herself, who feels she might have inherited this tendency to "fall in love" with an Indian from her aunt. The narrative estructure is quite easy going and, to my surprise, it's also quite graphic (without being pornographic) when it comes to the description of sex scenes. Whenever Blanca in her memories talked about sex or Laura met Nahueltruz, the description of sexual intercourses was very sensual and added a bit of "excitement" to the story besides the trivial conversations the characters had about Laura's brother's illness.Anyhow, like every story where different social classes clash (in this case it was not only a matter of social class but one of Ethnic and moral differences) disaster arises and both Laura and Nahueltruz's love is put in high risk and both lovers will have to make huge sacrifices in order to stand for their relationship. The book has an open ending as there is a sequel, "Indias Blancas: el regreso del ranquel" (something along the lines of "The return of the Ranquel", which is the Indian tribe Nahueltruz belongs to) and in terms of the title, "Indias Blancas" ("White Indians") it's an allusion to Blanca's life choice: she had turned into a white indian, that is, as a Catholic woman, she chose to live and die among the indians that kidnapped her because after giving birth to her child, she felt she belonged with the ranqueles. It was an interesting story though, that mixes history with romance, so for those who like those two things, it will be enjoyable. less
