Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac should never have met.

Lee is captain of the forces sent to Avon to crush the terraformed planet’s rebellious colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating the insurgents.

Rebellion is in Flynn’s blood. Terraforming corporations make their fortune by recruiting colonists to make the inhospitable planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon, and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion.

Desperate for any advantage in a bloody and unrelentingly war, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and Lee cross paths: he returns to base with her as prisoner. But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape the rebel base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war.

“Brave is protecting others from hurt.”

This Shattered World is an action-packed YA Sci-Fi novel filled with conspiracies, tension, and some romance. Told in dual POV, the novel follows a different couple, Jubilee and Flynn, and their star-crossed (insta) romance as they try to navigate a world that is about to break into war.

Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner create a pretty unique and interesting world for this series, which continues to be developed in this installment. The plot progression is also done well, but the slow beginning makes it a bit hard to connect with the characters and care much about what’s happening in Avon. The book does tie really well with the previous installment, though, which only makes things more interesting.

The writing in this is pretty good. It’s easy to follow and the shift between POVs is done really well, with each character having very unique voices. The passages in between chapters are also great, especially as they bring a new mystery to the story and contribute to a few of the reveals that happen throughout the plot.

Much like in These Broken Stars, there is quite a lot of repetition in this novel. Jubilee and Flynn constantly find themselves going through situations they’ve already gone through before. This is very true for the first half of the novel, which is also kind of slow and painful to read. Things do pick up a lot during the second half, and the ending is great.

There is a bit of instalove. The romantic aspect in general doesn’t work for me for the most part. This is another enemies to lovers kind of novel, so I find that there is little relationship development throughout the story. The focus of the book is very much on the science and conspiracy part of things, something that is so great, but the romance does suffer a little bit because of it.

Overall, This Shattered World is an entertaining read. It’s a great addition to the series, as it continues to develop the world-building and gives us new and complex characters to read about. Definitely recommend it to YA Sci-Fi fans who enjoy star-crossed lovers and action scenes.
